Glencoe

Even before the Jacobite uprisings of 1515 and 1745 , King William III feared that the Highlanders would rebel against him. He brought out a law proclaiming that the clan chiefs had to swear loyaltyto him. This was
the law that was the background to the
massacre of 1692.

Due to terrible weather at the time, the
chief of the MacDonald Clan was late in swearing this oath. On the 1st. of February,
120 Campbell troops marched into Glencoe
and stayed as guests of the MacDonalds.
After receiving typical highland hospitality
from their hosts for 2 weeks, they turned on the MacDonalds and murdered 38 of them , including women and children. Many more died fleeing over the mountains.

When we were here, the sun was splitting the heavens, as you can see from the photos. The river is usually a lot higher than this.Kids were paddling over to the other side and hardly getting their ankles wet.
